Willow Mountain Mushrooms ~ The Shroom Shack

Nestled in the Ozark Mountains of Southern Missouri, Willow Mountain Mushrooms has been providing gourmet quality mushrooms since 2004.

Using only Natural means to grow our mushrooms we maintain a high quality mushroom FULL of natural flavor not chemicals.

While other producers concentrate on a long shelf life by using chemicals ~

Willow Mountain Mushrooms specializes in delivering fresh picked mushrooms directly to you thereby avoiding the distribution system and the time it sits on your local stores shelf.

In doing this we maintain the mushrooms wonderful natural flavor that many people have told us they have never tasted before in store bought mushrooms.

Organic Produce Co-op

Organic Produce boxes delivered to your home, work, co-op meeting place or pick up point.

We offer a wide variety of boxes starting at the $20 level ~ Basic mixed boxes, veggie only, fruit only, snack/raw eating, juicing, Dried nut and fruit and add on's are available each week.

Each Wednesday we send an email letting you know what to expect in the following weeks box.

Standing orders are highly suggested, but not required. You can customize your standing order each week... or just 'know' that it will be there on your delivery day.

Being centrally located ... we deliver to Mountain Home, Gainesville and Theodosia on Wednesdays and to West Plains and Willow Springs on Thursdays.

Our supplier is unique in its approach to acquiring produce for the Co-op. The founders are farmers that got together in 2005 to create a co-op to help distribute their products. So, what they do is get products from smaller family farms first, many of which have CSA's, and then fill in the blanks with larger organic farms. Our goal is to do the same thing... utilize Ozark growers then fill in the blanks with what the supplier has to offer utilizing the smaller farms that they work with first.

To get started please fill in our contact form with the type of box you wish to order order, phone number and start up date and we will send you an email to confirm your order.

Look forward to meeting you!

Blessings,

The Semyck Family

Next week in Produce....

On the menu for next week:
For greens we have.... Red Leaf Lettuce, Baby Spinach and Baby Salad Mix.
Something new and interesting... Purple Bunched Carrots from White Mountain Farm (if they are sold out of the cool purple we will be getting the standard from the same farm)
Medium Red Onions, Local Peppers, Broccoli, Local Beans, Local Summer Squash (crookneck, zucchini, whatever the growers are harvesting), Cucumbers, Celery, Beets - Chiogga, Gold and/or Red, Bi-Color Sweet Corn, New Yukon Gold Potatoes from White Mountain Farm and of course Mushrooms round out the veggie side.  For the fruit portion we are going for Bananas, USA grown Gala, Granny Smith, Lemons, both a 8 oz and 16 oz Strawberry, Bartlett Pears, Juicy Valencia Oranges and Local Elderberries ~ Get your syrup ready for winter to help battle colds and flu.  Local Rhubarb will also be found in select boxes and will be available to add on.

Some of you may not know how the distribution network that we utilize got its start so I thought I would share that with you since we are going to be using produce from one of the original farms that came together to create it (White Mountain Farm).  Basically it was about 5 growers and a produce cooperative grower group (Coke Farms) that came together and created this network about 6 years ago.  They wanted to create a method for distributing their produce so that they wouldn't each, on an individual basis, have to purchase trucks, make calls (time), and distribute their individual farms produce (again - time).  By coming together it made it a whole lot easier on them as well as the customer and environment (less trucks on the road... less fuel... less environmental impact).  They eliminated the costly time and labor expense of having to make calls to all those restaurants and stores (and food coops like ours) and actually simplified things for the restaurants and stores too so that they wouldn't have to be ordering from so many places to fill the need... it was all in one spot making it much easier on everyone.  The goal for the farmer was that they would have more time to put into growing and could expand their farming to provide more nutritious food.  As a grower ourselves, let me tell you this is a HUGE benefit... two full days on the road distributing mushrooms, Two days at farmers markets and two partial days and nights of making calls cuts into how much time one has available to grow and for family - a lot.)
Fall last year the distribution network decided to expand and provide produce all the way to Springfield, MO.  We heard about them in Mid November last year...  Just after the trucks started making their deliveries.  We had been looking for such a means to provide fresh Organic Produce for our family and coop members so we were pretty excited.

Now, obviously growers can not provide things year round as growing seasons change and banana plantations do not exist in the US... so what they do is work with the small local growers first and then fill in the blanks with larger farms or things that are not in season here by getting them elsewhere.  I basically do the same here for everyone... I work with local to us first, then local/smaller farms that formed the distribution hub, then fill in the blanks with the larger farms.  It is well worth the effort.

We have two things this coming week that we will be adding to the boxes.  One is a Free sample loaf from Rachel of her Artisan Sour Dough Breads made with Organic Flours.  The other is the herbs that didn't quite make it here for this week.  The grower couldn't me me as planned so we postponed that mission until the week.  Below is my note from last week as a recap.

~~~~
"The Freebie this week is going to be a small sample of herbs from Local Grower Marantha Farms outside of West Plains.  In the fruit boxes you will have a bit of either Chocolate Mint and or Lemon Balm.  And in the Veggie boxes you may find basil, sage, thyme, rosemary or French Tarragon (my choice as I'm making up the boxes).  Herb bouquets are available on the extras list as are standard amounts of stand alone herbs: Basil, Lemon Balm and Chocolate Mint.
a bit on lemon balm:
"Lemon Balm:
Use fresh leaves in salads and as a garnish for fish and other dishes. When candied, the leaves make attractive cake decorations. Chopped leaves can be added to egg, fish and chicken dishes and sprinkled over fresh vegetables. Goes well with corn, broccoli, asparagus, lamb, shellfish, ground black pepper, olives and beans. Add the leaves to cooked dishes in the last few minutes. They can also be added to summer drinks and fruit salads, soups, sauces, and ice cream, and make a good substitute for lemon peel in recipes. An ingredient of Benedictine and Chartreuse. The flower tips and young leaves are floated in wine or fruit cups as a flavouring and garnish. Substitute for lemon rind in jam making, and add to marmalades. Makes a delicious tea, alone or added to ordinary tea.
It helps relieve anxiety attacks, palpitations with nausea, mild insomnia and phobias, and when used as a sedative it is good for children. It combines well with peppermint to stimulate circulation, and can also be used for colds and flu and is most effective in the early stages of a cold. The tea is used to treat headaches and tiredness, mild depression, laryngitis, colic and dizziness, and is reputed to enhance the memory. It calms a nervous stomach, controls high blood pressure, relieves menstrual cramps, promotes menstruation and treats insomnia. Fresh juice is used to treat goitre and Grave's Disease. It is especially suitable for children, and makes a good substitute for chamomile. A crushed fresh leaf applied to insect bites eases discomfort. As a poultice it treats sores and tumours. In ointment, it is good for cold sores." http://www.au.gardenweb.com/forums/load/ozherb/msg010546221749.html  (there are some recipes on this link as well)"
Back to School!
The children are returning to school.  So everyone is out running around getting organized for school with school supplies, cloths, shoes, equipment.... and during all this we need to eat!  So, for snacking on the run - without using a stove or hitting the supposed "fast food joint" we can look to the First Fast Foods for that REAL energy/nutrition that we need to get through the daily stresses.  Fresh fruits and Veggies to the rescue... however...  I know when I'm heading out I sometimes forget to pack up a snack to go with us.  So, to make that a whole lot easier I'm now keeping a small box with dried fruits and nuts in the van so we can grab a little something if we are out longer than expected or just need something to 'calm the masses' and help them off to sleep.  Be sure to check out the New Snack/Office Fresh Pack and Dried Fruit and Nut Pack.  Easy "to go" treats that will help fill the belly and tickle the taste buds.
  Enjoy!!!
